Born out of prayer gatherings that are uniting hundreds of young Christians in London, ‘At Your feet’ is a heartfelt expression of devotion, says our music editor

Many of us have been in awe of the recent signs of God at work across the nation. As a young person, it has been amazing to witness churches coming together in prayer and pursuing a continued revival. In London, three churches – SAINT, Imprint and KXC – are uniting for regular joint prayer gatherings. These meetings have received attention in the national press – partly because the sight of thousands of young Christians praying eagerly and late into the night has shocked secular journalists.

A lot of powerful worship music has emerged out of these unique events, including this month’s song of the month: ‘At Your feet’. The song is based on Mary’s act of humility, devotion and unconditional worship recorded in John’s Gospel where she anointed Jesus’ feet with expensive oil (John 12:3).

Verse 1 begins: “Lord with all my heart / I just want to be / an alabaster jar / broken for my King / my worship like oil / poured out at your feet.” This gesture from Mary is a powerful image of our worship filling a space, in the same way that the oil’s fragrance scented the house.

The chorus of: “With all that I am / my body and soul / I say Jesus I love you” is a powerful transition into a time of exalting Jesus’ name: “I’ll sing it again and again / till I run out of breath / how I love you…”

The final verse describes the way in which our own words can never be enough to express everything Jesus has done for us all: “I could pray all night / sing a thousand songs / but all my words fall short / could never be enough / to tell of your greatness and all you have done.” The only thing we can do in response is worship Him through the  gentle refrain that encourages us to lay everything down at His feet.

The song reaches its crescendo in the bridge, leading us to offer ourselves to Christ, just as Mary did: “I’m pouring out my oil / to the One who gave it all / finally broken at your feet.”

This song is a beautiful reminder of why we lay our lives down as living sacrifices. It also picks up a recent theme in Christian music that emphasises Jesus’ worthiness to receive our praise and adoration.

Ultimately, this is a prayer-born love letter that will prove a helpful resource for both congregational worship and personal devotion.
