The Church is made up of Christians from a myriad of different professions, and yet their ordinary tales of God at work rarely get told. In this series, we bring you stories of faith from the frontline
My name is Abigail King, and I work as a parliamentary aide and communications assistant, helping to run a peer’s parliamentary office.
One of the first things I do each morning is check the news, as it often shapes everything that follows: who we meet and what we focus on. Then I work through emails from stakeholders, including thinktank leaders, lobbyists, faith leaders and people involved in current projects.
I meet with a wide range of individuals, listen to ideas, organise meetings and events, and help move projects forward. I also research policy issues and draft speeches, although my boss often reworks them! Politics can be highly reactive, so I try to set aside time each week for deeper research and reflection, building knowledge that helps when unexpected questions arise.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is meeting people who are working to make the world a better place. Even when progress is slow, it’s encouraging to see small steps being taken and to know that, in some way, you are helping others. At the same time, change often takes years, particularly on issues such as social cohesion, which can be frustrating.
My Christian faith shapes my motivation and my approach to work. It encourages me to be diligent, to serve my boss well, and to think ahead rather than simply firefighting. It also reminds me that policy is ultimately about people – not statistics or headlines, but individuals who are loved by God and made in His image. That perspective keeps me grounded. I am not in Parliament to advance my own interests or simply to ‘win’, but to serve others faithfully through the responsibilities I have been given.
Knowing that God is in charge gives me a bigger picture and reminds me that political power, while important, is never ultimate. Westminster can be a rumour mill, where gossip and reputation often carry influence. I take my responsibility to act with integrity and respect the authority of the person I serve seriously.
Please pray for wisdom, strength and that I would be salt and light where God has placed me. I am still working out what to do with the rest of my life, but this role has deepened my desire to serve others.
