In a recent episode of her podcast, Khloé Kardashian shared vulnerably about her faith journey - and why she loves talking to God every day. It’s easy to judge other’s lifestyle choices, says Sophie Sanders, but instead she’s choosing to take inspiration from the Kardashian’s openness to speaking about their faith

Have you been keeping up with the Kardashians? While I could hardly call myself a mega fan, I have found myself increasingly intrigued by the recent headlines surrounding Khloé Kardashian’s Christian faith.

In a recent episode of her podcast ‘Khloé in Wonder Land’ titled Why I Believe, the third Kardashian sister revealed that she reads a daily devotional to her “glam squad” every day, and that her belief in Jesus both shapes her daily routines and sustains her through the ups and downs of life – “Bible!” as the Kardashian clan would say.

Khloé also revealed that she has inscribed Bible verses onto the wooden frames that support her house as a symbol that her life is rooted in God. This is inspired by Deuteronomy 6:9, when God told the Israelites to “write [God’s commands] on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates”.

In one of the most profound moments of the episode, Khloé tells her listeners that her Christian faith “has literally saved her life” and, because of that, she is committed to passing it onto her children. They pray each night before bed, a practice she intends to continue “until Jesus comes back”.

Ultimately, Khloé finds her identity in being “a child of God”, she says, and loves ”talking to God multiple times throughout the day”.

And there’s still more. She has begun studying theology - and wants to do more - and regularly discusses passages in scripture that she doesn’t understand with her pastor. That sounds like a ”full-fat” faith to me.

Faith revealed

Khloé’s public declaration of faith places her among a growing number of Christian celebrities, sports stars and influencers who are happy to speak about their faith in public. The “surprising rebirth of belief in God” has become increasingly visible in recent years, even among high-profile figures.

While these revelations may be surprising to some, it is far from the first time that the Kardashian’s faith has hit the headlines. The family has long-standing ties to Hillsong Church and Khloé is not the first sister to speak about her faith. Back in a 2018 interview with Vogue, Kim said that the family “start our day with a group chat with a Bible verse from my mom, and everyone chimes in on the meaning of it”.

Matriarch Kris Jenner describes herself as a “lover of Christ” in her X bio, whilst Kourtney publicly praised God for saving her unborn baby’s life through foetal surgery in an Instagram post.

Yet Khloé openly acknowledges that people are sometimes surprised by her faith, so I’m clearly not alone. As Christians, perhaps we have a narrow view of what a follower of Jesus should look like – and that mental image doesn’t include glamorous TV stars. Or we struggle to square Khloé’s lavish wealth or lifestyle decisions – particularly her approach to sex and relationships (she has two children with current partner, NBA star Tristan Thompson, despite the pair not being married) – with biblical teachings?

Honest faith

While the sincerity and depth of the Kardashian’s faith has been questioned and scrutinised in the press (and, if I’m honest, by me) it’s important to remember that James tells us: “there is only one lawgiver and judge, the one who is able to save and destroy” (4:12).

After all, who are we to judge the hearts of those around us? Jesus cautions that it is easy to see the speck of sawdust in someone else’s eye before you fess up about the plank in your own (see Matthew 7:3–5).

The Holy Spirit is increasingly convicting me of the many ways in which I fall short of Jesus’ perfect standards – and to not be prideful about my own choices. So, while I don’t agree with all of Khloé’s life decisions, I am challenged and inspired by her willingness to publicly proclaim that she is spending time in God’s word and sharing it with her children.

As I spend time with my godson in the park, or go for a drink with a friend this week, I’m encouraged to speak of my faith in tangible and winsome ways. What’s more, I’m also thinking about how I could display scripture around my home as a reminder of my covenant relationship with God and my commitment to serving him in my comings and goings.

Whatever your thoughts on the faith of Khloé and her mega famous family, join me in praying that these headlines would spark curiosity and lead to many, many more investigating the claims of Jesus and coming to full-fat faith in him.
