President Donald Trump has again suggested that good works might win him a place in heaven. Not so, says RT Kendall. Salvation is by faith alone
Dear Mr President,
I am your friend. I voted for you twice. I wrote you from Scotland a few years ago during your first term when I was invited to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Hebrides revival. While there I asked to be driven to your mother’s house. I sent you a photo of my wife and me in front of your mother’s house. You wrote me back and I treasure having your own famous signature in my possession.
However, I am honestly worried about you. I had assumed you were surrounded by people (some of whom I know personally) who gave you solid advice. They have apparently let you down.
I come to you on bended knee. No one has admired you more than I have, as my friends in Britain and America know.
You have said two strange things recently. First, you hoped that winning the Nobel Prize would get you to heaven. You actually said that. Three days ago you said that nothing will get you to heaven. Yesterday you virtually repeated this when you honored the late Charlie Kirk by giving him the well-deserved Presidential Medal of Freedom. I was deeply moved by your loving care of Charlie’s widow, Erika.
I don’t know how much you think about dying, Mr President. But it is obviously on your mind somewhat or you would not talk about heaven as you have been doing.
Forgive me if this sounds blunt and too direct, but I must lovingly remind you of what the Bible says, namely, that it is “appointed for people to die once – and after this, judgment” (Hebrews 9:27 – Christian Standard Bible).
It is a consistent biblical truth that all people will stand before God after we die – called the “judgment seat of Christ”. You and I will give an account of the deeds done “in the body, whether good or evil” (2 Corinthians 5:10). The reason it says “in the body” is because it will be too late to plead our case once we stand before God. We will be judged by what we did with our lives on this earth. This is why C. T. Stud, the famous English cricketer, said, “Only one life, twill soon be past. Only what’s done for Christ will last”.
I don’t know if any of your friends have talked like this to you. But when you enter into eternity, how great history will remember you as president will have nothing to do with what gets you to heaven.

We get to heaven one way: by transferring our hope in good works to the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. Salvation is by faith alone. Not by works. I have given this prayer for you to pray. I urge you to pray this – if you can say it from your heart while you are still alive:
Lord Jesus Christ, I need you. I want you. I know I am a sinner. I am sorry for my sins. Wash my sins away by your blood. I invite your Holy Spirit to come into my heart. As best as I know how, I give you my life. Amen.
That prayer is the way we get to heaven. And it is a guarenteed way if you seriously mean this from your heart.
God bless you.
Your true friend,
Dr RT Kendall
