For many children around the world, poverty affects far more than daily comfort. It can limit access to education, leave families struggling to provide nourishing food or school supplies, and make children more vulnerable to uncertainty about their future. For over 40 years, WorldShare’s ChildAid programme has existed to respond to those needs in a practical, personal and faith-filled way.
ChildAid is WorldShare’s child sponsorship programme. Through a monthly commitment of just £25, sponsors help provide vulnerable children with holistic support through trusted local ministry partners. The aim is not simply to meet one need in isolation, but to help a child grow and flourish physically, educationally, emotionally and spiritually.
Through ChildAid, support is shaped around each community’s needs, from education and nutrition to healthcare, family support, discipleship and opportunities to hear about new life in Jesus. In this way, ChildAid combines compassionate care with a clear Christian purpose: helping children discover that they are loved, valued and created with God-given potential.
ChildAid Around the World
ChildAid currently supports children in Ghana, Guatemala, India and Myanmar. In each place, WorldShare works through trusted local Christian partners who understand the needs, culture and challenges of their communities. This means support can be shaped around real-life circumstances, whether that involves education, nutrition, healthcare, discipleship, youth activities or family support.
For the past 25 years WorldShare has sponsored children at Potter’s House in Guatemala. Malnourished children living in difficult circumstances are supported with education, daily nutritious lunches, medical check-ups and practical help for families.
JKPS in West Bengal, India provides tuition-centre support, school supplies, Bible fellowship, sports events, career counselling and opportunities for children to develop confidence and leadership.
In Myanmar, Word of Hope Orphanage supports children’s education and care, including helping children progress through exams and daily life in a safe, supportive setting.
The latest ChildAid partnership is in Ghana with Living Word of Faith, which provides education for disadvantaged children from the impoverished Dome community in Accra.
What Sponsorship Provides
ChildAid sponsorship is designed to be relational as well as practical. When someone becomes a sponsor, they receive an information pack with details of their sponsored child, including a photograph. WorldShare aims for each sponsored child to send two letters each year, and sponsors are welcome to write back. Letters are translated where needed and monitored for safeguarding.
WorldShare has also recently introduced Nofam, a phone app where sponsors can safely send text messages, photos and even short videos to their sponsored child. The system is monitored by staff to ensure that both children and sponsors are protected.
Monthly sponsorship gifts are sent to the ministry partner supporting the child and are used for the benefit of the children in the scheme. This community-minded approach helps ensure that support is used responsibly and reaches children through trusted local workers.
A Life Opened Up Through Sponsorship
Adriana’s story shows how this support can make a lasting difference. Because of the poverty in her community in Guatemala, Adriana was clinically malnourished before joining the programme. Since receiving regular nutritious meals, she is now the healthy weight for her age. An excellent student, Adriana also receives daily educational support at her local Potter’s House Community Centre where she is working hard to fulfil her dream of becoming a vet. Her testimony highlights the deeper impact of long-term support: through Potter’s House, she says she has learned many things, especially the importance of worshipping God.
