In an interview with Wired magazine, Zuckerberg said: “Humanity has always pushed to come together in greater numbers to accomplish better things and improve our lives individually in ways we couldn’t in smaller groups.”

He said the megachurch is an example of a vast community that gathers under a leader’s guidance and divides itself into groups by interests, hobbies and goals.

Warren’s bestselling book The Purpose Driven Church (Zondervan) was based on Saddleback’s success and its ‘seeker sensitive’ church model. Today the church runs hundreds of care ministries, programmes and support groups.

Zuckerberg’s interview came just months after the entrepreneur wrote on his Facebook page about his changing attitude towards religion. When questioned about why he was celebrating Christmas he said: “I was raised Jewish and then I went through a period where I questioned things, but now I believe religion is very important.”

More than 1.86 billion people around the world are signed up to Facebook, with 1 billion users logging into the site at least once a month.
