Penetrated by a rogue shard of glass, the tyre exploded and deflated in seconds. Kay and I paused the marital hymn-singing we usually engage in while driving, and I turned to my wife, a composed smile on my face, and said: ‘Darling, I do believe that we have a flat tyre. Let us praise the Lord for the opportunity to rejoice in this minor but undeniably irritating development.’ She nodded an amen.
