If I asked you, Does God care about your work? the answer is likely to be, “Yes.” But my next question would be, Do you work like God cares?
For many years as a teacher, I was convinced that God cared about how I treated the students and whether I represented Him well in the staff room. But that was about the extent of my understanding of God’s interest in my ‘secular job’ - be a good representative of Christ and pray for opportunities to share my faith.
That’s a great start, but it isn’t a comprehensive enough biblical framework for understanding the value of work. I needed to learn about God’s care for the work itself. It matters to God that I prepare lessons with excellence, develop my professional skills, invite His help when student behaviour is challenging, and rely on the Holy Spirit to cultivate patience so I can become a better teacher.
When I discuss the topic of work with other Christians, I realise many of us instinctively divide life into spiritual and non-spiritual categories. We know God is deeply interested in how we treat others, but rarely consider what He thinks about how we approach our daily work.
Yet Scripture tells a different story.
The Bible begins with work. Before there was sin, before there was a temple or a priesthood, God placed humanity in a garden “to work it and take care of it” (Genesis 2:15). Work was never a consequence of the Fall; it was part of God’s good creation.
Why? Because God Himself works. As His image bearers, our ability to work reflects His character. From the beginning, work carried dignity and purpose because it enabled humanity to steward God’s creation. God has always cared about work because it has always been one of the primary ways He invites people to participate in His purposes.
If work mattered before the Fall, then its value cannot depend on how enjoyable or difficult it is. Genesis 3 makes it clear that sin brought frustration and toil into our work. It became harder, but not less valuable. The good news is that through Christ, we are redeemed to live under His rule in every area of life - including our work.
If God cares about our work, then Christian discipleship must include learning how to work with Him. Imagine beginning each day by asking not simply, “What do I need to accomplish today?” but, “Lord, what are You doing here today, and how can I join You?” Suddenly the spreadsheet, the meeting and the difficult conversation become places where faith is lived out rather than sidelined.
At Worship.Works, we meet Christians who long to integrate their faith and work but have never been shown how. Our Year of Transformation programme equips believers to recognise God’s activity in their everyday workplaces and partner with Him there.
When we become convinced that God cares about our work, we stop seeing the 9-5 as a pause in our discipleship and begin to recognise it as one of the primary places where we follow Christ. Our whole lives become one integrated calling to serve Him - wherever we are and whatever we do.
