On this album, the nation’s best-known and loved gospel choir presents us with their interpretations of a dozen old songs.

In addition to the usual suspects (‘Amazing Grace’, ‘When the Saints Go Marching In’, ‘Swing Low’ and ‘Abide With Me’), we’re treated to a moving rendition of U2’s ‘One’, while Paul Carrack guests on ‘Soul to Soul’.

The more theologically inclined may want to question some of the song choices (‘Let It Be’, for instance, or Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’). I’m just trying to figure out why this album has been released at this time. Is Christmas here already? Or is this something to tide us over until the next season of Glee starts on telly?

HIGH: Giving a new lease of life to a forgotten Temptations song (‘Soul to Soul’).

LOW: The gospel-choir-does-‘inspirational’-covers album concept has been done to death.
