There is a cancer eating at the heart of the Church – pornography. As you would expect from Tim Chester, Captured by a Better Vision represents a thorough and solidly biblical approach to the issue. A certain level of theological understanding is assumed, with typical sentences including ‘don’t let your good, sound theology of the perseverance of the saints deafen you to the awe inducing warnings of scripture...’ and ‘porn offers a form of redemption through self atonement.’ Its approach is somewhere between that of a study guide and a practical and realistic help book. Perhaps more use of testimony would have been good, as would some contribution from addiction experts.
Overall, it is logical, covers a lot of ground and will be a big help to leaders of churches, small groups and individuals. Chester’s conclusion is that you can break free and stay free, but he is realistic about the battle.
