This is the gist of the idea proposed by Grudem (theologian) and Asmus (economist) in this accessible 400-page book aimed at influencing Christian leaders in poor nations, and those involved in government, businesses and charities; both Christian and not.

The two authors believe the free market has led to prosperity in the past (notably in the UK) as well as recent growth in emerging economies. They list no fewer than 79 ways in which governments can ensure that the free market is released to work its magic. They believe these approaches are underpinned by biblical values.

Bible texts are occasionally stretched to serve their argument, but there is much here for readers to ponder. Few books aim to help the ‘whole nation’ from a biblical angle, and none in this precise way, and with such skill. AP
