SHOUT TO THE LORD Darlene Zschech

Often considered the first lady of modern worship leading, this is Darlene’s best-known song. It’s an excellent choice for ‘hands in the air’-style congregations, especially when the chorus kicks in. Both hands is standard practice if a key change occurs.

I’M EVERY WOMAN Chaka Khan or Whitney Houston

This is a classic late-night karaoke song about female empowerment, though I’m yet to understand how anyone could be ‘every woman’. Plus the opening lines, ‘Whatever you want, whatever you need/Anything you want done baby, I’ll do it naturally’ sound less like female empowerment and more like a slave auction.

WANNABE Spice Girls

This was the first hit for the group that coined the phrase ‘girl power’, addressing the lack of feminine representation in the music industry and the dominance of masculine leadership in label management and distribution. Presumably that’s what ‘zig-a-zig-ah’ means.
