PFI was founded in 1979 by Charles Colson, one of President Richard Nixon’s advisers who served a prison sentence for his part in the Watergate affair. It now has 45,000 volunteers working with 2 million inmates in 127 countries.
Two pilot projects that train leaders to run ‘The Prisoner’s Journey’ have been launched in Nigeria and South Africa. A total of 250 volunteers and chaplains were trained in two Nigerian locations, while another 60 volunteers and chaplains completed the leaders’ training in South Africa.
CEM chief executive Ian Roberts said he was ‘delighted’ to partner with PFI, ‘an organisation whose scope of ministry in prisons and heart to share the gospel is unparalleled’.
